03/04/04 - EAA RETAINS JOHNSON TO LEAD SPORT PILOT AND LIGHT-SPORT AIRCRAFT MARKETING EFFORTS

March 4, 2004 - Dan Johnson, who is well known throughout the ultralight and light-plane communities, has been retained by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) to handle sport pilot/light-sport aircraft marketing efforts, as the rule clears its final hurdles before publication later this year.

Johnson will implement programs and activities that will help people discover the opportunities available within these exciting new categories of pilots and aircraft.  EAA has been preparing to assist its members and other aviation enthusiasts interested in flying within these categories.  The sport pilot and light-sport aircraft initiatives have great potential to open aviation to many more people.

”Dan brings a very broad knowledge of the light-sport aircraft community and its many diverse participants,”  said Bob Warner, EAA Executive Vice President. “EAA’s decade of experience in the development of what commonly known as ↑ Sport Pilot↓  makes it the most able resource for those interested in using the new categories to fulfill their aviation ambitions.  EAA members will continue to benefit greatly from this knowledge and expertise, which is enhanced by Dan’s arrival.”

Johnson has been involved with ultralights since the first ones evolved in the late 1970s. He has run flight schools, a flight park, published an aviation magazine and has manufactured ultralight aircraft.  He presently serves on the ASTM International F37 committee, which is drafting certification standards for light-sport aircraft.

“EAA is such a dynamic organization that has been at the forefront of Sport Pilot’s development,” Johnson said. “It’s the place to be for those who see Sport Pilot as a huge opportunity for recreational aviation.  I am very excited to use my experience and background to help EAA members fully experience the possibilities available to them through this new pilot and aircraft certification system.”

Johnson is a well-known aviation writer who has been published in numerous aviation magazines and, over the past 27 years, has published pilot reports on 280 light aircraft.   He is the 1999 winner of United States Ultralight Association’s Moody Award; the 2001 recipient of the Spirit of Flight Award from the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and EAA; and was awarded the 2003 Outstanding Leadership Award from ASTM International.   In addition, Dan narrated the 1998 FAA/EAA video, First Flights in Your Ultralight/Lightplane.

EAA, The Leader in Recreational Aviation, is an international association with 170,000 members and more than 1,000 local Chapters.  For more information on EAA and its programs, call 1-800-JOIN-EAA (1-800-564-6322) or explore EAA’s World Wide Web site (
