09/16/04 - EAA EFFORTS RESULT IN OVER 600 NEW REGISTRATIONS
Prior to the September 1 deadline, EAA's Aviation Services Department vigorously sought to get unregistered ultralight pilots and instructors to register with EAA. By doing so, they could take advantage of FAA’s offer for experience credit when transitioning to sport pilot or instructor certificates in the future. The final tally shows that as a result of the registration drive, 460 new ultralight pilots and 150 new ultralight instructors signed up in the two months preceding the FAA deadline. This is a 530 percent increase over normal activity in pilot registrations, 87 percent for instructors.
Many of the new registered were also made aware of EAA programs and services and decided to become members. “We’ve been very happy with the number of people calling about registering, those actually registering, and extremely pleased with the number of new EAA members we’ve welcomed as a result,” said EAA’s Ultralight Programs Manager Timm Bogenhagen. “It got very busy because so many people had questions. We were more than happy to oblige them. Overall the response was just great.”
Bogenhagen stressed to anyone who has yet to register that it’s still advantageous to do so. “EAA encourages those out there to still register and receive credit for your ultralight flying time toward the sport pilot certificate,” he said. While those on the books prior to September 1 may be eligible to take the sport pilot practical and written tests sooner, those registering post-September 1 will simply have to visit a sport pilot instructor and receive endorsements stating they are ready for the tests.
