Interest in the Sport Pilot/Light-Sport Aircraft rule continues to grow, evidenced by the more than 500 people who attended the Calhoun Georgia Sport Light Expo in last weekend. Representing EAA was SP/LSA consultant Dan Johnson, who gave two well-attended forums and handed out hundreds of new EAA Sport Pilot Sourcebooks. At least 100 aircraft arrived during the event, Johnson reported. “Lots of folks took rides in LSA and other aircraft, plus there was a good number of Young Eagles flights.”

Among the aircraft appearing were a Zenith CH-601; SportAir USA StingSport; RANS S-6; Sportsplanes’ Breezer; Jabiru J-250, Just Aircraft Escapade, a one-off tricycle-gear Hummel Bird, and Ferguson Aircraft’s new tricycle gear FX-4-1, an amateur-built, 51-percent kit.

Several other opportunities remain this year to learn more about sport pilot. This weekend, October 1-2, is the
Virginia State EAA Fly-In at Dinwiddie County Airport, Petersburg. Numerous LSAs are expected, along with several opportunities to learn about the recreational flying category.

Next week the two final EAA regional fly-ins of the season are scheduled, Copperstate, October 6-9 at Casa Grande Airport, Arizona; and the Southeast Regional Fly-in (SERFI) October 7-9 at Middleton Field, Evergreen, Alabama.

The second annual
U.S. Sport Aviation Expo is slated for October 27-30 in Sebring, Florida. A NAFI Sport Pilot Symposium will be held in conjunction with the Expo on Saturday, October 29.

Finally, EAA’s popular and informative Sport Pilot Tour resumes November 12 at Collin County Regional Airport in McKinney, Texas (Dallas area). The final stop for the year is December 3 at the Camarillo, California, Airport.

Hundreds of aviation enthusiasts got an up-close look at several LSA parked along the flightline.
